  1. 2. Ross's appeal to ethos is really effective. He basically tells us that the reader should consider playing paintball because it's good for your mentality and also your health.
    3. Ross's appeal to pathos is pretty effective. At the beginning, he shares his experience with playing paintball and how fun it is. Then throughout the story he goes and defends critics saying that although paintball is a fun sport, it isn't safe for children to play.He shares his story on how he saw a kid playing paintball, got hurt and started crying.
4.Ross's appeal to logos, is very effective, more effective than his opposed side of the argument. He uses source from an article about a shooting and his experience. For his opposed side he uses mainly his opinion by saying that he does think that paintball can be violent in a very slight degree, but he still thinks that it isn't to a point to where it involves killing people.

  2. 2. Ross Taylor’s appeals to ethos can be described as being effective in this argument though not entirely consistent but often strong. He is trustworthy and compelling listening to his tone and depth of personal experience in paintball game. He did support his reasons by explaining the game paintball in details with its advantages, precautions; the purpose and goal of the game and he also addressed paintball critics. Taylor says, “Paintball is fun athletic, mentally challenging recreational activity that builds teamwork and releases tension.”(P.2)He acknowledged that paintball is violent to a degree and the whole point is to “kill” each other with guns. He also acknowledged that eye injury can occur in paintball game if one ignores taking safety precautions. For instance, he had a friend personally lose an eye after inadvertently shooting himself in the eye from a very close range. In addition, he gave strong examples (P.9)why paintball can be safe, challenging; and players not just full of violent urges, but focused on winning the game as a team. Other advantages include building company team spirit, communication skills; strategizing and critical thinking analysis. (P.9-10)

    3. Here, Taylor’s appeals to pathos are very sympathetic and sensational. He agreed that paintball guns can be used in irresponsible manners and calls the percentage of people that practice violent in paintball-"bad apples". Taylor shows pathos in his emotional arguments and explanation of his experience with paintball game; friends and paintball game critics then went back to his subject saying, “So despite the bad apples, paintball is still a worthwhile activity when properly practiced; and it is a great way to get physical exercise, make friends, and have fun”(P.10).

    4. Taylor’s appeals to logos in this piece are very effective. He applied his logics best when explaining his arguments with others in details from page two to page eight. For examples is his shooting and personal experience, the documentary references, quotes and statistics where he talked about the Fortune 500 companies, an article by medical writer Cheryl Guttman in a trade magazine for ophthalmologists, softball or soccer teams and killers in Michael Moore’s Bowling for Columbine which has nothing to do with paintball playing. Taylor demonstrated that paintball game has benefits; negative and true characteristics of a healthy team sport like ultimate Frisbee, soccer, or pickup basketball and baseball. He only recommends the game to adults because kids cannot bear the pain in paintball game (P.2).

  3. 2)Ross Raylor has a personal attachent to paintball battle games. So, he is speaking with personal experience and is asuring us it's a safe game. It is okay to worm up to the idea of this sport, for it is only beneficial to you and your family.

    3) Ross goes on explaing by expressing how fun and safe it actually is and is just not so fun for the smaller kids.

    4) Ross asure us by saying "The public seems to have received the impression that paintball guns are simply eye-removing hardware". He feels this sport deserves some respect, so with proper gear and supervision it is a great recreational activity, paintball deserves the same respect as other sports. It is a great way to get physical exercise, make friends, and have fun.

  4. 2.Taylor's take on ethos is pretty effective. The reader should go paintballing. Paintball is very good for you mentally and physically. Mentally you can let out some anger and physically your out moving and exercising.
    3. Taylor's take on pathos is very much effective. He shares his experience with paintball, and how he has fun. But it isn't safe for children. Taylor saw a kid playing once and got hurt.
    4. Taylor's take on logos is more effective. He tells the reader about an article about a shooting and his experience. Paintball can be very fun as well as dangerous, but not to the point where you have to harm or kill someone.

  5. 2. Ross's take on ethos is used very well. He explains how it is for both genders and how you can play no matter how strong you are, or your body size and type. He explains how it is healthy and even considered a sport. He also explains how it is good for us mentally. Because of using these reasons, his affect on using ethos is very well done.
3.Ross uses pathos in a way that may grab his readers attention because he expressed his own experience and explained in detail how fun it really is. Explaining this he also used somewhat a small amount of emotion in explaining how fun it is and how it is beneficial to our mental and physical health.
    4. For logos he uses things to express and prove that paint ball is worth playing and everyone should give it a try. He used a website to show that the sport really is worth playing.

  6. 2. Ross's ethos appeal is effective because, he talks about how fun and safety paintball can be. He also talks about little risks that can happen.
3.Ross uses pathos by using his own personal experience of paintballing and talks about how a small child cried when he got hit so its not much fun for small kids.
4.Ross uses logos by talking about how paintball is good for use mentally to work as groups. He mentions Fortune 500 companies around the world take their employees to play paintball together. Because it improves the communication among them to work as a team.

  7. 2. Ross's ethos appeal is effective by giving the paintball game credibility. He believes that by playing the game will help people mentally and physically an he gives an example by his own experience.

    3. Ross's pathos appeal is effective by being sympathetic with people that may not have the physical condition to play paintball. He does mention in paragraph 6 that the game is open to anyone who wants to play.

    4. Ross's logos appeal is effective by persuading people to play the paintball game. He add his experience and he is very honest about the game that may be painful but at the end is fun.

  8. 2. Ross's appeal to ethos was miniscule. Yes he may have did a great job on justifying paintball as whole but only credited himself. What would have supported his appeal to ethos more effectively, would have included more responses from other paintball players and their perspective on the sport itself. The essay felt tunnel vision when it came to ethos.

    3. Ross's appeal to pathos was very persuasive. His essay gave many reasoning's behind his emotional convincement to that of paintballing and participation of the sport. He used pathos throughout his essay and did not seclude it to just an area of his writing. He did a great job promoting the sport throughout.

    4. Ross's appeal to logos was supportive in his essay but not his strong point. With the use of very little statistics in his essay he helped justify why again paintballing can be dangerous and unhealthy. For instance, page three hundred thirty-nine, he mentions statistical number of injuries from a span of fifteen years but fails to support his rebuttal with support facts. Rather, Ross only uses probability and self reasoning as to why these injuries occur and mentioned nothing as to how the sport has made improvements to prevent these injuries from reoccurring.

  9. 2.) Ross's appeals to ethos are very effective. He has extensive firsthand knowledge of the game and the rules, having participated in the game many times. He also knows the history and is aware of the criticisms of the sport as well.
3.) Ross's appeal to pathos is not quite as effective. He does a good job pointing out the good aspects of the game and making it sound fun and worthwhile, and he effectively portrays it as a team building sport that can bring people closer together. However, the empathy he expresses to objectors of the game is lacking.
4.) Ross's appeals to logos are perhaps the most effective. His paper is very well researched and he makes excellent points about the benefits of the game. His responses to opposing views are somewhat opinionated, but he does state several statistics to back his claims up.

  10. 2. Ross's appeal to Ethos is effective because he describes the relatively safe sport of paintball. He shows main points about how it is safe as long as the proper gear and precautions are taken. This enhances the credibility of his essay about paintball.

3.Ross's appeal to Pathos is quite effective because he describes how much physical and mental effort is used to play the game of paintball. He explains paintball as a safe way to release tension for people. He empathizes with kids by explaining that they usually are too sensitive to pain.

    4. Ross's appeal to logos is strong in his essay. He provides reasons that support his claim, like paintball as a mental and physical workout. His responses to opposing views are strong because he provides strong counterarguments against those views.

  11. 2. Ross’ appeals to ethos were reasonably persuasive. He gains some credibility by pointing out that Fortune 500 companies use paintball as a team building exercise. However, in my opinion, he loses credibility as an unbiased writher with his opening paragraph, immediately describing paintball as “splendor and glory.” That immediately made me think he would be biased towards a pro-paintball stance.
    3. Ross does attempt to spark an emotional response with his readers very heavily. He vividly describes paintball as being fun and plays on peoples emotional desires to be part of a team by describing the team building exercises. He assuages the opposing views by acknowledging their fear of danger and attempts to refute them.
    4. I do not believe Ross presented very logical arguments supporting paintball as safe. He even acknowledges, “yes, paintball is dangerous to a degree”, while providing a story about a friend losing an eye from improper handling of a paintball gun. He “expert” testimony is a quote from a paintball facility which cannot be considered an unbiased source. He quotes a study from a medical professional warning about the dangers of paintball eye injuries, and then claims that over a 15-year period there were 102 eye injury cases but does not cite any source. To me, this is not effective arguing.

  12. 2) Ross' appeals to ethos really come through for him in this essay. He describes paintball as "fun" multiple times, explains that anyone can play paintball, even you, reader! The introduction really draws you in with the description of himself playing paintball.
    3) Ross' appeals to pathos are pretty effective, using personal stories and experiences to get that emotional reaction from the reader. He taps into the reader's desire to experience fun, build as a team, and get a good workout. He even talks about paintball being a great outing for a company.
    4) Ross' appeal to logos fell a bit short to me, I find him too biased to offer a real counterargument to the ones presented. He uses statistics, but tries to prove them false by saying that it's all due to a lack of safety measures taken by the victims. As a person who has played paintball's kin sport airsoft, I know this to not be true as I have seen people injured while taking those proper safety measures. I think he definitely could have spent more time gathering more sources and spending time arguing both sides of the issue.

  13. 2. Ross's appeals to ethos are very effective because he wants you to understand how playing paintball can be good for you health and physical education. He describes how paintball is fun and him playing it.
    3. Ross's appeal to pathos is really effective because he explains how much fun it is playing paintball and wants his readers to be persuaded to enjoy the activity. He tries to get to the readers by saying that he wants them to see how much fun they would have if they played it.
    4. Ross's appeal to logos are not as effective as the ethos and pathos were. He doesn't provide the right counterargument to his essay. He does not provide everything that could happen while playing paintball. The safety of others and anyone who could get hurt.

  14. 2. Ross's appeals to ethos in the argument is very effective. Ross shares his own experiences regarding paintball. Yes, he does create a persona that I find trustworthy and compelling. Ross gives examples within the argument on how paintball is not a violent sport. Paintball is a sport that produces intense exhilaration and fun.
    3. Ross's appeals to pathos are quite well persuasive. Ross is mainly trying to convince the audience that paintball is a safe sport. Even families like to play paintball together. Ross claims that paintball is mentally challenging and team- building sport. Paintball is the most misunderstood activity but paintball is a positive recreational activity.
    4. Ross's appeal to logos is effective, he points out the benefits of playing paintball. He uses his own experiences and reasons how paintball is a safe sport. Ross also tells the audience when paintball is played properly, paintball is a safe sport.

  15. 2. In regard to ethos, the authors argument is moderately effective. He adds supporting details and introduces outside evidence to support his argument. He, for the most part, stays consistent throughout the piece. However I did find some areas where consistency was a little flawed, examples being the personal anecdote where he states that paintball is completely safe but his friend lost an eye. He also adds school shootings being unrelated to paintball but only gives one specific instance of a documentary of Columbine. It would be interesting to see the correlation between school shootings as a whole with paintball.
    3. Pathos was used more effectively in this passage, the author consistently appeals to the readers emotions and values. By mentioning the health benefits and team building benefits he is placating the audiences values for good health and teamwork. He points out the benefits of critical thinking and the fact that once the game is over they are all on the same team again. Use of words such as cooperation, and team spirit will harness the feeling of togetherness and sense of belonging in the reader. Overall this piece has a good sense of pathos and appeals to many values and emotions.
3.The use of logos was again semi-effective in this piece. The author does add some outside sourcing to add weight to his arguments, but I think a big opportunity was missed while dealing with opponents arguments. Essentially while proving paintball is a safe sport, he supports with evidence on sports injuries then shoots his own argument in the foot with a personal story in which his friend lost an eye. While appealing to the side of safety the author switches sides by showing how not safe the sport is. Again when dealing with the violence aspect of paintball, Mr Taylor states how the sport is not violent but oh yeah you do "kill" your opponent. He then proceeds to bring in school shootings but only offers one case in which the students didn't play paintball before they carried out a massacre. I think the understanding of handling arguments was there but the actual execution was a bit ineffective.

  16. 2. Ross’s appeal to ethos is a very strong argument. His tone throughout the essay is that of a trustworthy friend. He also explains the game of paintball beyond just the sport. He mentions the teamwork involved and thinking skills needed to play.
    3. Ross’s appeal to pathos is good. He mentions children getting injured while playing paintball, which appeals to the reader’s emotions. He also makes the game of paintball sound very appealing, for it is a wonderful physical activity for your health and well-being. Reading his experience makes you want to join in.
    4. Ross’s appeal to logos could have been better. He mentions how many people get hurt but he does not do a good job arguing the point that paintball is a safe sport. While he has a persuasive tone throughout the essay, he did not provide the facts to support his theory. Blaming people for not taking the proper safety measures is not a logical argument.

  17. 2. Ross does create a persona that is trustworthy and compelling, and becasue of this, Ross was effective in his appeals to ethos. He created trust by sharing his knowledge and experience about the sport, as well as his honesty. He was compelling in this piece by the way that he would openly discuss the criticism against the sport and defend it.
3.Ross did have effective appeals to pathos by talking about the values and interests of the audience, as well as addressing emotional concerns the audience must have. He talked a lot about the benefits, such as it being healthy and rewarding. The concerns that he knew the audience would be worried about, he counteracted them with explanations.
4.Ross also had a strong appeal to logos. He went into detail discussing and introducing the evidence he had to defend his points. This made his response's to opposing views effective.

  21. 2.)Ross appeals to ethos was very effective due that on the beginning he uses a scenario on how paintball is play also he gives details and information bout the game. I think he creates a persona by describing the game and how someone is suppose to play it. He does this but giving examples on how paintball is not dangerous.

3.)Ross appeals to Pathos in an effective way by mentioning the health of the players and also by the children may be hurt.

4.) His Logos is effective because he assures the reader on how plying paintball is not going to hurt or kill someone.

  22. 2. With Ross’ personal experience with paint ball, it shows that he has a personal attachment to the game. Due to him having been in the situation himself he knows it’s safe, and is a game people will enjoy. He reaches out to the audience with the appeal of ethos.
    3. Ross appeals in the form of pathos. While he does say paintball is a very fun game, if people are not responsible it can be dangerous. He sympathizes with the audience who worry about the safety of paint ball and does suggest it may not be as safe to the younger crowd.
    4. Despite all the negativity thrown towards paintball and being told it is very dangerous, he strongly feels like the game is safe and very much enjoyable. If there are precautions it is a safe game. He uses logos to attract the audience this way.

  23. 2. I believe that Ross’s ethos appeal is effective, the game is described very well and there are benefits to the game that are mentioned as well.
    3. Ross’s pathos appeal is also effective because the fun of the game is described and we are also being convinced to play the game. How safe paintball can be and how beneficial to our health it can be as well.
    4. Ross appears to logos by describing also the risks of paint-balling, and how you can get hurt. But just as long as the game is played correctly no one will get seriously injured.
